Music In Your Heart

Happy Monday! Yesterday I shared the exciting news about becoming part the International Scrapbook Garden Design Team and posted the kit reveal and a little sneak peek at my project. Today I’m excited to share my first project with the Toolshed: Summer Concert kit with you!

I recently returned from a trip to visit my sister in Virginia so she could finally meet Zae! I took lots of pics of him and my niece and nephew. I have't scrapped my nephew for a long time, and it was time he got a little love!

I particularly loved how the yellow portions of the kit perfectly fit with my nephew's Pokemon pajamas! There were so many fun yellow items in this kit I decided to segregate them from the blue and rusty elements and go all yellow and black, which is such a fun color combination. Plus yellow is one of my many favorite colors ;)

I had the perfect jumping off place with these awesome papers; I love love love chevron paper and the 13Arts Aria Story papers have such a great textural element in them. {Also, I think I was subconsciously channeling my last Virginia trip when I scrapped this layout - something a little familiar with the diagonal and the chevrons and black accents!}

Here's a few close-ups of the finished layout:

The only thing not from the kit are the two chippie stickers, which are Mambi Sticks. Everything else is from the Toolshed: Summer Concert kit.

Here are a few of the behind-the-scenes process photos:

Am I the only one who is fighting back tears as she tears into a beautiful piece of scrapbook paper? {as I weep, "Please forgive me, yellow chevron paper--this hurts me as much as it hurts you}

I wanted to share how I treated the cogs for this because it is so easy and gives a great sort of distressed iron look perfect for grungy and industrial scrapbook styles. You can see the one on the left is just plain black, which falls very flat, while the one on the right has texture.

Simply paint or ink your wood in black (or any base coat color you want!), then sponge lightly with a silver ink to give a speckled finish. Vary the pressure on the different pieces to add a little textural interest. Easy peasy but a detail that adds a great finishing touch! I was avoiding orange hues for this layout, but adding yet another layer of hints of rusty reds and oranges would make your pieces have the appearance of rusted metal.
